This creamy avocado-based Cilantro Lime Sauce is smooth, tangy, and full of fresh flavor. It works well as a dip, a drizzle for tacos, or a topping for grilled meats and vegetables.
Back when my husband and I were dating and first married, we would often split an appetizer as our meal at restaurants. One of our favorites was Southwestern Egg Rolls and they were always served with the most delicious cilantro lime sauce.
I did my best to figure out how to make that creamy avocado sauce at home by playing around with cilantro, avocado, lime and more until I figured out the right consistency and flavor. Here’s what you’ll need:
Ingredients needed for cilantro lime sauce:
- avocado-use a ripe avocado for the most nutty flavor
- mayonnaise
- sour cream
- cilantro
- green onion
- buttermilk-adds a tangy depth of flavor that you definitely need-see tip below for a substitute
- olive oil
- lime juice-squeeze it fresh or use bottled lime juice
- salt
Tip!
Don’t have buttermilk? You can make your own instead! Add 1 Tablespoon of lemon juice to 1 cup of milk and let it sit for 15-20 minutes to sour. Use what you need and store the rest for future use in an ice cube tray in the freezer.
Some version or another of avocado sauce made its way onto a lot of menus now. They all seem to feature that brightness that comes with adding cilantro and citrus to a recipe.
It’s a great alternative to salsa when enjoying tacos or southwestern salads. Mix up a jar and add it to your list of favorite condiments in the fridge!
Instructions:
Add all the ingredients to a blender or food processor and puree until well blended. That’s it!
Store the cilantro lime sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator (it does thicken up a bit after chilling) and use up within 1 week for best results.
