Wipe down your bathroom walls with this simple DIY Mold Remover and get rid of those ugly black spots easily!
Even though our master bathroom has an exhaust fan AND a window, I still have patches of mold growing in the corners above the shower. We recently had the tub/shower replaced and so they painted the walls as part of the cleanup. Just a couple of months later, the mold is growing again in the same spots!
I tried scrubbing it with cleaners and spraying it with vinegar, but so far nothing has worked. I figured I didn’t have anything to lose when I saw this DIY idea.
Hydrogen peroxide is super cheap and I always have some around the house. I placed 1/2 cup hydrogen peroxide (3% solution) in a spray bottle. Then I sprayed down all my corners and let it sit for one hour.
After an hour passed, I wiped down the walls with a wet rag and this was the result:
The mold wiped right off-no scrubbing required! There are still spots left, but I was at the very edge of my reach trying to get to the corner of the ceiling and walls while balancing on the edge of the tub.
Next time I’ll have to actually pull out a step-ladder so I can get better leverage. But all in all, I’d say this was a success! Note: this won’t completely kill mold on a porous surface, so the issue of why it’s growing may still need to be dealt with.
However, it’s a great solution for getting the ugly black marks off the walls when you’re cleaning.
Another option is to use a mixture of bleach and water. This will also take off the marks without scrubbing, but the fumes can be really overwhelming. Hydrogen Peroxide is a safer option for removing mold from bathroom walls.

Why add water to the mixture? Wouldn’t it be best to apply only Hydrogen peroxide to make it stronger?

I was concerned about ruining the finish on my paint, so diluting seemed to be the safer option. That was also what I read on other sites suggesting hydrogen peroxide for cleaning.

Love this tip! Thanks! I use HP all the time around the house, but never like this in the shower. My favorite use is with Dawn to take stains out of the carpet or to work on yellow stains on t-shirts. Thanks again!

I have a question. Peroxide works as a lightener, but does it kill bacteria the way bleach does? I just wonder if the mold will grow again?
Fun fact, my sister’s friend worked in a dermatologist’s office and told me that it will lighten up age spots. Don’t know how frequently you have to use it, but it’s cheap, so it doesn’t hurt to try!

I wrote a post a while ago about using lemon to lighten age spots. 🙂 Didn’t seem to work for me- but I’ll certainly try the peroxide! 🙂 I’m not sure about the peroxide vs bleach. All I know is that bleach didn’t take it off the walls. It’s been a few weeks since I used the peroxide and it still looks good. If it does come back, I’ll hit it with peroxide again and then try spray bleach to kill if off.
