Wake up to the aroma of apple pie when you cook this Overnight Apple Oatmeal in the slow cooker all night!
I’ve tried this recipe for Apple Pie Overnight Oatmeal before, but as my Pinterest boards start filling up with apples and other heralds of fall, I start to crave it again. I took the opportunity to play with the recipe and make a few changes.
Waking up to the aroma of apple pie in the kitchen draws you in for breakfast! I find that if I take the time to eat a hearty breakfast like this, I won’t be digging through the cupboards at 10:00 looking for a snack.
Ingredients needed:
- butter
- apples-Granny Smith apples are the best option for slow cooking like this
- brown sugar
- cinnamon
- old fashioned or steel cut oats
- water
- optional-evaporated milk
Supplies:
- Pretty purple Crockpot (OK, you can use whatever color you want) 😉
- Slow cooker liners (seriously, make your life easier- you’ll thank me later)
Substitution ideas for overnight apple pie oatmeal:
The best thing about a recipe like this is that you can adjust it to fit your personal tastes. If you like your oatmeal a little more runny, just add some milk when you spoon it into your bowl.
If you like raisins, toss those in with the apples. If you want it sweeter, add more sugar.
If you prefer to sweeten with honey, leave out the sugar and use that instead. If you like creamy oatmeal, try using half and half in place of some of the water.

Overnight Apple Oatmeal

- 2 tbsp butter
- 4 medium apples peeled and diced

- 1 1/2 tbsp cinnamon
- 2 cups old fashioned oats
- 4 cups water or a combination of water and evaporated milk.
Instructions
- Break up the butter into small pieces and drop it all around the bottom of a slow cooker. While doing this, wipe down the sides of the cooker with a pat of butter to keep from forming a “crust” along the edges.
- Cover butter pats with diced apples.
- Sprinkle cinnamon across the apples
- Pour sugar over the apples and cinnamon
- Cover with two cups of oats
- Gently pour in 4 cups of water
- DO NOT STIR
- Place on low setting and cook overnight, 8-10 hours.
- Serve as is, or pour milk over it, if you like your oats that way!

This turned out horribly. Sugar burned to sides even with buttering, soupy, oats all but dissolved, cinnamon was over powering the soupy mess. I was making this for company, and we ended up feeding them cereal and leftover pie. I followed the instructions to a t including do not stir which I believe was my first mistake.

So sorry to hear that! I’ve made it several times and you can see in the comments that others have as well, so I’m not sure what happened. But it sounds like your crockpot cooks really hot. I have one that did that after several years and I eventually had to replace it because I kept ruining my food!
Julie Stokes says
It could have been the oats she used. Using quick or instant oats would cook much faster than old fashioned oats.
Elaine Stitcher says
This is awesome! Came out perfect! I cannot imagine what happened when you did it!
Kate says
I had the same experience as Jen back in June. I have a new crock pot, and nothing else I have cooked has been over done. I put it on low for 9:30 hours, but tried it at the 8 hour mark. Almost no taste at all, other than the taste and texture of cinnamon.
Nicole Burkholder says
I’m sorry to hear that. I have discovered that the type of Apple makes a big difference in taste and texture. A good baking apple, like Granny Smith, works much better than softer varieties.
Kendra says
Can you use agave nectar/honey instead of brown sugar?
Nicole Burkholder says
You certainly could. I don’t see why that would affect the cooking process at all. ๐ let me know what you think when you try it!
Amanda says
Can I use steel cut oats instead?
Nicole Burkholder says
I haven’t tried it myself, but there are several recipes I’ve read that are similar but call for steel cut oats. I think it would be fine.

Thank you for making your recipes printable! I love to print out the good ones and keep them in a binder in my kitchen. So many of the food blog folks don’t do this and it’s a bit of a pain to do a copy and paste into a word doc for printing. Kudos to you! Oh, and love your recipes!!!
Nicole Burkholder says
Well thank you SO MUCH for letting me know! I was using something to format my recipes a while ago, but it went out of business, so then I had to just write them in myself and they didn’t have the formatting options for print. But I just found a new one and decided to bite the bullet and just pay for it so my recipes would be easily searchable online and also have the print option. This just let me know that it was worth it! I appreciate your feedback and your kind words! ๐ I’ve got a couple really yummy recipes coming up this next week-one for the crockpot, so keep an eye out! ๐
Jacqlyn says
How big of a crock does this fill? Worried if I should double this or not!
Nicole Burkholder says
Mine is a 6 quart (or 7)? And it would have room to double. But I havent tested that recipe so I can’t promise it will cook the same ๐
Laura says
This is the best oatmeal I have ever had! I am not the greatest cook in the kitchen but this recipe makes me look like an accomplished cook!! Thank you so much for sharing!
Nicole Burkholder says
You are so welcome! I’m glad you love it! ๐
Betty says
Maybe I did something wrong but mine burnt to the sides of the crockpot. I buttered it per the instructions. I used a 5 qt crockpot and put it on low for 7 hours. Woke up and the house smelled burnt
Nicole Burkholder says
Sounds like your crock pot just cooks too hot. I am sorry ๐ That can happen. I have an older pot that i never use for overnight dishes because it always burns things. If you wanted to try again, I would makd it during thd day. Try four hours on low and see how it goes.
Betty says
If I were to make it again I would use the timer on my crockpot and set it to 4 or 5 hours
Nicole Burkholder says
I wish I had a timer on mine! That’s such a great invention! ๐ Good luck with the 2nd time around.
Layne says
I’m adding this to our list of breakfast options – how delicious and wholesome. thanks!
Emily says
I made this last night & it’s almost overpowered by cinnamon. Did you mean 2 teaspoon of cinnamon? I did a little over 1 tablespoon & it’s almost too much. I will defininetly make this again but with less cinnamon
Nicole Burkholder says
No, it’s definitely 2 tbsp of cinnamon. You made the whole recipe, right? Two cups of oatmeal to 4 cups of water? That’s a lot of oatmeal to dilute the cinnamon. You can certainly adjust to suit your own tastes, though! ๐
Alexis says
Made this for breakfast yesterday morning and it was awesome! Probably the best oatmeal I’ve ever had! Getting up this morning was easy because I had the leftovers to look forward to. This recipe’s a keeper!
Nicole Burkholder says
I can’t tell you how happy that makes me! I love when something I make and love is also enjoyed by my readers! ๐
Elena says
Made this last night for the first time and it was DELICIOUS. Went to bed at 10 PM, woke up at 6:30 AM and the oatmeal was absolutely perfect. I used old-fashioned oats per the recipe, and was worried the oatmeal would be mushy but it was absolutely perfect. I have a small crock pot, so I halved the recipe – using 1 heaping cup of oats and 2 1/2 cups of milk. It was so creamy and delicious, I cant’t wait to make it again! Thanks for the recipe ๐
Nicole Burkholder says
I’m so glad to hear that! Isn’t the smell just amazing when you wake up?!?
Meaghan says
Can I use quick oats or should I go by the non-quick?
Nicole Burkholder says
I used quick oats the first time because that’s all I had and it was fine. The consistency is a little sticky/thick I think but it’s not a huge difference.
Cassandra says
how many would you say this recipie will feed?
Nicole Burkholder says
My estimate would be 10-12 people with about 1/2 cup serving size.
Kirsten says
Just got back from the apple orchard and now I know what we’re having for breakfast tomorrow! Thanks for the recipe!
Nicole Burkholder says
I wish we had an apple picking place closer to us! Enjoy your oatmeal ๐
Mary says
Looks delish! I noticed that the ingredient list didn’t include half and half but the instructions did. Should I use half and half then?
Nicole Burkholder says
Thanks for pointing that out! I edited the recipe. The half and half is optional. I used only water, but you can use a combination of both.
Allison says
What size crock pot did you use? Thanks for the awesome recipe!
Nicole Burkholder says
I’m pretty sure my crock is a 5 quart. But there was still plenty of room- I could have doubled the recipe and still been OK.
Allison says
Thanks!

Hi Nicole! Crock pot apple oatmeal is one of my favorites, but I never thought to use the butter on the sides of my crockpot. Brilliant! You are right………it smells so good when you wake up in the morning. And……..your picture is way better than mine. Oatmeal is just ugly!
Nicole Burkholder says
I did my best ๐ I think the butter makes the apples taste extra yummy, too!
Cassi says
I’ve never done breakfast in the crockpot. Sounds yummy!
Nicole Burkholder says
It smells SO good when you wake up! We are usually a cereal for breakfast kind of family, but occasionally I like a hot breakfast!
Shirley Wood says
You are so right, some food are just a little camera shy, aren’t they. I have never made overnight oatmeal but I may have to try. Oatmeal is one of my favorite breakfast dishes. Thanks for sharing with us at The Yuck Stops Here. Please be sure to come again!
