Start with a basic no churn ice cream recipe and make it your own with these 3 different options for flavoring! Homemade ice cream doesn’t get any easier than this!
How did I manage to get so many years into adulthood without ever before enjoying No Churn Ice Cream? I had no idea it was so easy to make this summer treat. My kids were thrilled as I tested out different flavor combinations and mix-ins.
No Churn Ice Cream is way easier to make than traditional homemade ice cream. Granted, it’s not exactly the same thing, but it’s creamy, cold and delicious. I’ll take it!
I started with a basic recipe and experimented with three different options for adding flavor to the ice cream. Keep reading for the details on how to make Cookies and Cream, Strawberry and Berry Blue flavored no churn ice cream. They make a great red, white and blue sundae!
1. Flavoring no churn ice cream with mix-ins
Ingredients needed:
- sweetened condensed milk
- heavy cream
- vanilla extract
- pinch of salt
- mix-in of choice (Oreo cookie pieces for Cookies and Cream flavor)
Cookies and Cream is my personal favorite. It starts with the basic ice cream recipe and uses a mix-in for flavoring. You can use cookies, chopped up candy bars, nuts, small candies…any kind of treat that can mix easily into the ice cream is perfect for making your own flavors!
For best results when you are flavoring with mix-ins, allow the ice cream to partially set in the freezer first. When it’s the consistency of soft serve ice cream (after about 2 hours) then you can mix in the cookie pieces. This will get them evenly spread through the ice cream. Be sure to save a few pieces for the top!
Cover with foil or plastic wrap and freeze overnight.
2. Flavoring with extracts
The next option for flavoring no churn ice cream is flavor extracts. Since I was working toward a red-white-blue theme for mine, I went with strawberry as my flavor of choice.
You can find a variety of flavor extracts in the baking aisle of your local grocery store. For more unique flavors, like cotton candy or cake batter, try specialty baking shops or Amazon.
Ingredients needed:
- sweetened condensed milk
- heavy cream
- extract of choice
- pinch of salt
- red food coloring (if you want to have the bright pink/red color, otherwise leave it out)
- mix-ins like fresh fruit or jam
For Strawberry No Churn Ice Cream, simply add strawberry extract to the basic ice cream recipe. To punch up the flavor, stir in small chunks of fresh strawberry and scoops of strawberry jam. Use a knife to swirl the strawberry jam throughout the ice cream.
Again, this should be done after the ice cream has been in the freezer for about 2 hours and reaches a soft serve consistency. Then cover tightly and freeze overnight.
3. Flavoring no churn ice cream with Jello
The last option for flavoring no churn ice cream is to use Jello packets for both flavor and color. Simply whisk it into the condensed milk mixture before adding the cream.
Ingredients needed:
- sweetened condensed milk
- heavy cream
- 3.4 oz. box of any flavor Jell-O (I used Berry Blue)
- pinch of salt
- mix-ins like fresh fruit or jam
Using a packet of Jello mix to flavor ice cream is a great way to get both color and flavor into the base recipe. There are so many flavor options!
I opted for fresh blueberries to mix into my Berry Blue Ice Cream. However, I should have cut them up into smaller pieces. Whole frozen blueberries can be a bit much. Leave some fresh (unfrozen) for the top if you really want the larger bites of blueberries on your ice cream.
When all three of my flavors were frozen, I put them together for a fun red, white and blue sundae. Yes, it’s more like baby blue/teal, pink and white but you get the idea. Add some patriotic sprinkles and no one will even notice. 😉
No Churn Ice Cream (with 3 flavoring options)
Ingredients
- 1 can (14 oz.) sweetened condensed milk
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- pinch of salt
- 2 cups (half pint) heavy whipping cream
Instructions
- In a large bowl, whisk together the condensed milk, extract and salt. Set aside.
- Whip the heavy cream with a mixer until stiff peaks form (usually 2-3 minutes.) Fold about 1 cup of the whipped cream into the condensed milk mixture with a rubber spatula.
- Fold the lightened mixture into the remaining whipped cream and gently mix until blended.
- Pour into a 9x5 loaf pan and freeze (covered) until creamy like soft serve (about 2 hours.) Swirl in any desired mix-ins and return to freezer until solid (about 3 more hours.) See notes below for 3 different flavoring options.
Notes
1. Flavoring with mix-ins
- Follow instructions in Step 4 for adding mix-ins. Some options are:
- 1 cup of chopped up cookies
- candy bar pieces
- fresh fruit
- nuts or peanut butter
- jam
- ice cream toppings like caramel sauce.
2. Flavoring with extracts
Instead of vanilla extract in Step 1, use any other flavor desired. Typically, you will use more than you would for vanilla ice cream. Start with 1 Tbsp, then taste the mixture and add more as desired.3. Flavoring with Jell-O
Add 1 (3.4 oz) package of Jello powder mix to the ingredients in Step 1. Fold in as directed in following steps.Nutrition
