As I’ve mentioned a few times, I hosted a cookie exchange last week, and I’ve had cookies on the mind and on the blog ever since! OREO Cookie Balls, Cranberry White Chocolate cookies (coming soon) felt cookies (you don’t want to eat those) and now Dark Chocolate Chip Chipotle Cookies. Today’s recipe has that extra ingredient that takes it from just another cookie recipe to delicious party food!
So, do you think you can guess what the secret ingredient is in these rich, fudgy (spell check insists that’s not a word but I’m choosing to ignore it) chocolate cookies? I’ll give you a hint. It’s smoky and a little bit savory, and you may have never used it in a dessert before…
Do you know your sauces? Because this new flavor has gone way past condiment and is now making its way into so many recipes in our house! Give up? OK, I’ll make it easy for you. 🙂
I didn’t even know Tabasco made anything but the original red sauce, but this chipotle flavor is SO GOOD. I know you wouldn’t normally use something spicy in a dessert, but there are certain flavors that just belong together. I use cocoa powder in my chili, so why not try it backwards and add some spice to my chocolate cookies? I have to say, it really works! Dark chocolate is a little bitter and very rich and it’s countered by a little tingle of spice and a delicious, subtle smoky flavor. If you are looking for something different and delicious on your holiday table this year, try these cookies!
Dark Chocolate Chipotle Cookies
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup butter , softened
- 3/4 cups brown sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 tbsp milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 tsp Chipotle Tabasco sauce
- 1 1/2 cups flour
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 cup dark chocolate chips , plus extra for topping
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350° and line baking sheet with parchment paper
- Cream butter and sugar together with hand mixer. Beat in eggs, milk, vanilla and Tabasco sauce until smooth
- In another bowl, combine flour, cocoa, soda and salt. Add into the liquid mixture and beat until a dough forms (it's pretty sticky.) Stir in chocolate chips
- Spoon onto the cookie sheet (about 1 tbsp dough) and flatten slightly in the center if necessary. You can add a few chips to the top of the cookies if desired.
- Bake cookies at 350° for 8 minutes, remove from oven and let cool on the pan for another 5 minutes.

It is. And it’s really something you have to try. My mom kept looking at me like I was crazy when I was talking about the recipe. 🙂 It’s subtle- just a little kick of spicy and smokey flavor.
