As I was browsing through my Marriage board on Pinterest, looking for inspiration for today’s post, I was struck by the simplicity of this quote by C.S. Lewis. We should always be looking for ways to improve our relationship with our spouse, but it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the wealth of information and advice in books, magazines and the internet. Marriage blogging is a HUGE chunk of the blogosphere and everyone has his own opinion about absolutely everything! As Christians, I think we too often fall into the trap of looking for answers when we have the ultimate Guide Book sitting on the shelf right next to us!
Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. -Matthew 22:37-38
If Jesus said it, I guess we should do it! And why wouldn’t it apply to marriage? Loving God supremely puts everything in its proper place. It’s the ultimate “trickle-down” effect! We worked with teenagers for ten years, and finding the will of God was always such a key issue with them. We had to remind them over and over again-just do what you know you’re supposed to do right now. Stay in God’s will day by day and the future will take care of itself, because He’ll be guiding you one step at a time. I think the same thing applies here to marriage. Do what you know you should be doing-love God-and the effect on your marriage will be that you grow to love one another more than you ever could have on your own!
